The Cable Guy
When I got my plane, the rudder cables were already swagged (Nico pressed) with the 3/32 galvanized cable
that came with the kit. I'm sure they were fine, yet as I go along building I get to some areas that I ask myself a
question...
Will you bet your life on whether it is done right? I think this is a healthy approach, because if I
can't say yes, I will do it over or correct whatever it may be. This question usually comes up as I'm doing
something with the structure or control surfaces and you can bet it kept running through my mind every time I
looked at the end of the cable. I finally broke down and bought some 7-19 SS 3/32 cable from Spruce along
with several other components. The following pictures will tell the story.
I decided to go with turnbuckles at the
rudder. I like the adjust ability they
offer plus I think they just look cool.
With a little help from Spruce I selected
the following parts.
The Nico press is purchased for the
size cable that you are working on.
Here it is after the sleeves are
pressed. Takes a little bit of
holding your mouth right while
doing it...so much so that I called in
my navigator (Wendy) to assist.
Everything needs to be held in
place just so or it won't come out
right.
This is a Go-no-Go card that tells you
whether the sleeve was compressed to
specs. If the sleve doesn't fit into the
3/32 notch, then sumthin is arye matey.
Best not Go.
As a finishing touch I used a little
shrink tube.
