Yellowstone
Slough Creek
Thanks to Cameron Shirley giving us the tip...the Slough Creek trip turned out to be one of the most
memorable times of our vacation. This is God's country at its finest! This area is located just up from the
Lamar Valley which is in the north east section of the park.
Even though we had heard this
was bear country and had
purchased bear repellent (big
can of pepper spray), reading the
trail head sign of how people
have been attacked and killed
and this is an AT YOUR OWN
RISK AREA... didn't put Wendy's
mind at ease. It was a bit
sobering and caused one to stay
aware of the surroundings.
There is a working ranch that is
located north of the third meadow (I
believe in Montana) that has been in
existence since before Yellowstone
became a park. The park allowed
passage of this wagon to transport
visitors and supplies as this is the only
way to and from the ranch. We thought
it was neat that we were able to see
the wagon we read about in
publications.
We were told by more than one person
that Slough Creek fishing could be
fairly technical.
After we got to the first meadow it
didn't take long to determine the trout
were feeding on mayflies, however, I
tried two mayfly patterns before they
would take them.
Here you can see the mayfly in the
right side of the cutthroat's mouth.
